During the session, Dr Thomas McGrath, Manager Reduced-Risk Products, introduced PMI's Reduced-Risk Product (RRP)* portfolio and underlined the importance of suitable alternatives for adult smokers to switch.
Successful harm reduction requires that adult smokers who intend to continue smoking be offered a range of satisfying, scientifically substantiated smoke-free products.

PMI’s four reduced-risk platforms were on display, and they generated a lively conversation on the future generation of nicotine technology.
PMI's demonstration machine provided an opportunity for participants to understand the fundamental differences between the aerosol of Platform 1 and the smoke from a reference cigarette. Viewers could observe the color of the particles found in cigarette smoke trapped on a laboratory filter pad. They could directly compare the color and odor of the aerosol residue from a cigarette and the Tobacco Heating System (THS) of Platform 1.
The residue collected on the filter pad after one cigarette was enough to turn the filter pad brown, while the residue collected from THS aerosol on a separate filter pad remained free of such discoloration. The THS aerosol also produced much less smell in this setting.
The most important comparison, however, is that the levels of harmful and potentially harmful chemicals found in the aerosol, which is beyond the scope of the machine because it can only be measured reliably in validated and calibrated laboratory conditions.
For a detailed description of the reduction of these compounds in Platform 1’s aerosol compared to a reference cigarette in validated settings, please refer to this peer-reviewed article:

The demonstration complemented the upcoming scientific discussion of GFN and illustrated the potential of novel nicotine technologies.
*Our RRPs Reduced-Risk Products (“RRPs”) is the term we use to refer to products that present, are likely to present, or have the potential to present less risk of harm to smokers who switch to these products versus continued smoking. We have a range of RRPs in various stages of development, scientific assessment and commercialization. Because our RRPs do not burn tobacco, they produce far lower quantities of harmful and potentially harmful compounds than found in cigarette smoke."
