Philip Morris International R&D scientific mission over the past decade has included the research and development of potentially less harmful alternatives to cigarettes. Actively participating at conferences like the Global Forum on Nicotine is part of PMI’s endeavors towards achieving these goals and ensuring understanding of our approaches.
As an internationally-renowned multi-stakeholder event, this conference brings together policy analysts, regulators, academic, researchers, public health professionals, consumer advocates, and manufacturers and distributors of alternative nicotine products, all intent on enhancing their knowledge of nicotine and its uses.
Evidence, accountability and transparency were the main topics of this year’s forum. At PMI we are committed to transparent and independent advancement of the science related to these alternatives to cigarettes. To demonstrate this, we are constantly seeking innovative ways of communicating our science, as shown during this recent event.
The focus of Moira Gilchrist’s presentation during the “Science and Policy Updates” satellite session in Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment done for the Tobacco Heating System (THS 2.2), one of these alternatives and PMI's candidate modified risk tobacco product, was on showing the evidence currently collected relating to THS2.2. Even though the results presented are encouraging. PMI is committed to assessing the totality of the evidence to determine whether it can support claims for such products of reduced exposure to harmful and potentially harmful constituents in smoke, and ultimately claims of reduced disease risk, when compared to smoking cigarettes.

There was positive reception to the information presented by the PMI R&D team. It is clear that perceptions towards nicotine divide opinion. However the scientific and political landscape of this forum provided an opportunity for an open, honest and transparent discussion on the future of public health.
