About Manuel
As the Chief Science Officer at Philip Morris International, I am focused on the science behind Heated Tobacco Products and e-cigarettes to drive Tobacco Harm Reduction. I stand for scientific excellence, executed to the highest standards of quality as well as for scientific transparency and verification.
I have many years of experience leading large multi-cultural research teams in systems biology and toxicology, scientific computing (bio- and chemo-informatics), text mining and molecular biology.
I hold several patents related to proteomics, genomics and scientific computing, and I’ve published over 250 articles, book chapters and technical reports. My publications have been cited over 27,000 times and I’ve done groundbreaking research into computational structural biology, text mining and systems toxicology.
I founded two start-up companies, the [BC]2 conference, and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, where I serve as the chairman of the board.
Academically, I hold a BSc in Life Sciences, a MSc in Physical Chemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry, while I’m also an Adjunct Professor for Bioinformatics at the University of Basel.
Among the honors I’ve received are the New England Business and Technology Award and the UnitedDevices Grid Visionary Award. I’m also a ComputerWorld Honors Laureate.
