Objectives:
There is growing evidence to suggest that substituting or reducing cigarettes with non-combustible tobacco products, such as heated tobacco products (HTPs), can reduce exposure to the harms of tobacco smoke. This study assessed the use of the Tobacco Heating System (THS; the study product) among adults who smoke cigarettes to examine partial or complete switching from cigarettes and reduction in cigarette consumption.

Methods:
This pre-market actual-use study assessed the adoption of an induction-based HTP among 828 adults in the US who smoke cigarettes daily. The study was conducted from 19/Jan/2023 to 10/Apr/2023. After participants were randomized to one of two device forms, there was a 1-week baseline and 4-week observational period during which participants were provided with the study product. Use of the study product, conversion, and reduction in cigarette consumption were assessed at the end of the observational period.

Results:
A total of 86.6% of the participants used the study product; 8.2% converted ≥95% of their cigarette consumption with the study product, including 7.0% who switched from cigarettes to exclusive use of the study product. Nearly half of adults who smoke cigarettes reduced their number of cigarettes per day by ≥50% compared to baseline.

Conclusions:
These findings complement existing scientific evidence that HTPs may be an alternative to cigarettes among adults who smoke cigarettes in the US.
