      Open Science. Open Questions. Open Answers.

      Does our leading heated tobacco product’s aerosol contain substances not present in cigarette smoke or at higher levels? What is the impact of passive exposure to our leading heated tobacco product’s aerosol? How do we know that use of heated tobacco products replaces smoking rather than increasing total nicotine consumption? For the fifth installment of our Open Science event, we answered questions around these and other topics.

      At Philip Morris International (PMI) we are convinced that scientifically substantiated smoke-free products can positively contribute to population harm reduction. We are equally convinced about the robustness of our scientific assessments, which is why we are committed to openly sharing our results and encouraging external verification. 

      With the ambition to foster dialogue and fact-based conversations, in 2020 we started the Open Science series where we have publicly presented our findings and answered numerous questions about our research and technology. Since some of them could not be answered due to time restrictions, the November Open Science event was dedicated to those important questions that deserved a thorough discussion.

      The November 2021 Open Science event was hosted on November 4, 2021. 

       

      In previous Open Science events, we received over 150 questions from the audience. We carefully reviewed all the questions from last year's sessions, as well as new questions submitted during this Open Science session.

      Panel discussion

      Our four panelists revisited topics from previous events, answered audience questions we couldn’t get to last time. They also tackled a few misconceptions about our company, our research, and about harm reduction in general.

       

      Each panelist is an expert in their own field and answered questions related to their background, and they also answered questions from the audience live during the session.

       

      Answering your questions about PMI's strategy, smoke-free products, and their assessment

      At our fifth Open Science event, our leading scientists responded to the most frequently asked questions from you. These questions ranged from topics as diverse as our overall business strategy, the composition of aerosols of the Tobacco Heating System, the health impact of smoke-free products, and consumer perception and behavior following the introduction of our leading heated tobacco product. 

      Dedicating an Open Science session to answering your questions is an important part of our commitment to transparency and open science, as we believe that it is important to share our research findings and studies on smoke-free products.

      Reduced Risk Products ("RRPs”) is the term we use to refer to products that present, are likely to present, or have the potential to present less risk of harm to smokers who switch to these products versus continuing smoking. PMI has a range of RRPs in various stages of development, scientific assessment and commercialization. All of our RRPs are smoke-free products that deliver nicotine with far lower quantities of harmful and potentially harmful constituents than found in cigarette smoke.
